Ticks and Disease

Ticks Transmit More Than Just Lyme

Ticks can carry and transmit hundreds of pathogens:  not only Borrelia, the bacteria implicated in Lyme disease, but also Babesia, Ehrlichia, Anaplasma, Bartonella, Mycoplasma, Toxoplasma, Rickettsia, and many others.  Each of these pathogens can have many different species, and many species are continually mutating to evade detection by our immune system.

Not Just Deer Ticks

Any kind of tick - not just deer ticks - at any time in its life cycle can carry and transmit pathogens.  So can spiders, mosquitos, black flies, sand flies, fleas, and lice.  So can dogs, cats, and other animals via saliva or a scratch or nip.  People can also transmit pathogens via saliva and other body fluid contact.

Diganosis Is Difficult

Fewer than 30% of people infected with Lyme develop a bull's-eye rash.  Many do not develop fever, joint pain, or any of the 'typical' clinical symptoms associated with Lyme. The standard lab assays - ELISA and the Western Blot - result in over 50% false negatives.

Timing Makes It Trickier

If antibiotics are used, the best time to administer them is immediately after infection.  Yet the ELISA and Western Blot lab tests measure antibody levels, which take several weeks to develop.   By the time lab testing shows a positive diagnosis and antibiotics are prescribed, pathogens have often hidden and mutated deep in the body, making antibiotics ineffective.  Even when antibiotics are used acutely, they only target pathogens that are actively replicating.  Dormant 'persister' pathogens can evade antibiotics.  Any pathogens that do survive can cause symptoms months or years later.

Co-infections/Co-factors

Each individual has a unique biochemistry and genetic profile, and has had exposure to a different amount of pathogens and toxins over their lifetime.  Immune systems are each managing unique burdens, and bodies each have their own 'weak links.'  Thus the same tick bite can have different effects.

Ticks Can Transmit Infections In Minutes

Ticks can transmit pathogens within minutes of biting a host.  They don't have to be completely embedded, and/or attached for a certain number of hours or days, to transmit infection.
